How Helicopter Autorotation Works
Rotor Spin: When an engine fails, the pilot lowers the collective pitch control, allowing oncoming upward air to "windmill" and spin the rotor blades.
Building Lift: The spinning blades build up rotational inertia and create minor upward aerodynamic force.
The Final Flare: Just before hitting the ground, the pilot pulls up on the collective pitch, using that stored blade inertia to cushion the landing and sharply reduce the rate of fall.
