Detachable gondola systems are a type of aerial lift where the cabins (gondolas or chairs) can detach from the main haul rope at the stations. This allows the cabins to slow down for passengers to board and exit safely and comfortably, while the main cable continues to move at a high speed, enabling faster overall transport. These systems are common in ski resorts and urban transit, with variations including monocable (MDG), bicable (BDG), and tricable (TDG or 3S) configurations.  

How they work

• Detachable grips: 

The cabins are equipped with a grip that can be opened and closed.

• Slowing down: 

As a cabin enters a station, the grip is guided onto a separate rail system and is compressed, causing it to release from the main haul rope.

• Slow movement: 

A roller then moves the cabin and its grip along a separate rail at a much slower speed, allowing passengers to board or disembark easily.

• Re-attaching: 

When leaving the station, the grip is re-compressed to open, then guided back to the main rope, and the compression is released to clamp onto it, accelerating to the normal high speed. 

Types of systems

• Monocable Detachable Gondola (MDG): 
This is the most common type, using a single cable for both support and propulsion. 

• Bicable Detachable Gondola (BDG): 

Uses a second, separate cable for support, though this type is now less common. 

• Tricable Detachable Gondola (TDG or 3S): 

The most advanced type, it uses two support cables and one separate propulsion cable, offering very high capacity and wind stability. 

• Detachable Chairlifts: 

The same technology is used for chairlifts, making them "high-speed" or "express" lifts.

Especially in 3S systems, they can transport a large number of people per hour.

The ability to slow down in stations makes for a more comfortable and accessible boarding and deboarding experience. 

• Speed: 

They significantly increase transport speeds compared to fixed-grip systems. 

• Flexibility: 

Can be designed for large capacities and can cover long spans, making them suitable for complex or demanding routes.
